A tank 2m long, 1m wide and 1 m deep is filled with water. find the work required to pump water half of the tank (use the fact that the density of water is 1000 kg / m ^ 3)
I guess the water is pumped to the height of the top of the aquarium. The first thing to note is that there is no need to use the calculation. We assumed that water density is constant, so that the necessary work is equal to the work required to raise a point mass equal to the mass of water being pumped and at the center of gravity. The water pumped has an elevation of 0.5 1 meter. Thus, the center of gravity to pump water has an elevation of 0.75 meters, so that the point mass has to be raised through a height of 0.25 meters. Work done = mgh = potential energy gained where m = mass g = acceleration of gravity and height h = mass = density * volume therefore the mass of water = 2 m * 1 m * 0.5 m * 1000 kg / m ^ 3 = 1.000 g kg = 9.8 m / s ^ 2 Therefore the work needed to pump half the water of the tank = 1.000 kg * 9.8 m / s * 0.25 m ^ 2 = 2450 Joules
