How to reduce ammonia in my tank?
My wife recently gave me a fish tank and my fish are dying one by one, had been in a few aquarium shops, said the ammonia levels are too high. Is there a way to reduce ammonia levels present medically. Thnx
In an established tank, ammonia should be undetectable using standard test equipment available in stores. The presence of detectable levels indicates that the biological filter is not working properly, either because your tank has not completed a cycle, or the filter is not working properly. The exact concentration in which ammonia becomes toxic to fish varies among species, some are more tolerant than others. In addition, other factors like water temperature and chemistry play an important role. If ammonia levels rise during the cycling process, corrective measures be taken to avoid killing fish. Up likely, you will simply perform a sequence of partial water changes, diluting ammonia to safer concentrations. As a final caution, several products commercial (eg “''" Amquel "Ammo-Lock or “'') safely neutralize ammonia's toxicity. "Amquel" does not remove ammonia, simply neutralizes its toxicity. Biological filtration is still needed to convert the (neutralized) ammonia to nitrite and nitrate. Thus, the addition of "Amquel" makes the ammonia produced by fish to be neutralized instantly, yet allows the cycle nitrogen to continue. It is also possible to cycle a tank without the addition of fish. Fish role in the process of providing cycling is simply the constant production ammonia, the same effect can be achieved by adding ammonia chemical forms manually (eg ammonium chloride).
