Does anyone have any tips on breeding guppies as feeders?
I have a small snake that only wants to eat small fish or tadpoles. He can not eat small fish or goldfish, because they have a chemical that blocks the absorption of thiamine. Guppies, Xiphophorus and tadpoles are acceptable, but I can not find anywhere near me (SC PA). All the stores sell only goldfish and small fish feed, have no tadpoles guppies and Xiphophorus and sold as pets. I tried a recipe for salmon, tilapia, gelatin and blend of vitamins that I found online. The diet seems to be very sound, by many accounts, but I mean the snake seems to insist on live food. I have a spare tank, and I've read that guppies are easy to grow, so I think I could make their staple food. If anyone has experience in breeding feeder guppies I would appreciate your advice. I do not want to get into the breeding of fish, but it seems they have no choice. I''m starting with a 10-gallon aquarium that has a filtration system.
Hopefully I play guppies but most of mine came all unhinged looking overbroad because of how the "fantasy" values are, so if I were you I would like go through the hassle of finding a "wild type" material supply for its breeding program. You will probably want to create at least 2 tanks to be really serious about getting a good number of fry to survive more than adults will eat the babies left in them. You can get a breeding box female to give birth in babies and move to the new tank. But if you can not set that up right away, I think some do survive if they are given to enable them hide. The plants floating on the surface seem to help. In my experience, guppies are not too fussy about breeding, but you should have an aquarium heater and salt (not sea salt) and 2 women of all males in January. After that do the bulk of the work. I feed the fry crushed flakes and frozen shrimp brine BABY. Good luck.
