fish with hypoxic respiratory problems?
for about 2 weeks I've been watching my fish hanging out on the water surface, swimming around and sucking on the surface as if they were eating. I have a goldfish about 2 inches, a green cobra guppy about 1 inch and a crayfish about 2 ½ inches. are in a plastic container of 3.5 gallons and I have two filters operated at the same time, they are using the same fact for 5-airpump 10gallons water. I do my weekly cleaning (vaccuming gravel, scraping algae, changes in water and food i day.today once i added a tablespoon of aquarium salt to help the gills. the pH is 7.4 and the levels 0ppm nitrite, ammonia, I would expect that 0ppm too since the return of ammonia to nitrite but I dont have a nitrate test kit. my question is are my fish experiencing hypoxia, or goldfishs green cobra guppy and the inhabitants of the top. Should I buy a new, stronger air pump to increase aeration? I it's too much information but I thought that's what you need to know to help me.
First, your tank is way overcrowded. 3.5 gal is not enough to meet your goldfish alone. As a general rule most people suggest going with one to two gallons per inch of fish. I personally do not follows that the rule, since the fish need all the world is different. I'm assuming from what you said, the filters it uses are driven by an air pump. Those things in my experience are pretty useless and really do not filter the water. I suggest getting a power filter, things are much more powerful and efficient. Also, you should check the proportion of ammonia, only because they have no nitrite does not mean that we have no ammonia that has not broken yet. Another good thing to see is nitrate. If the nitrate accumulates as bad as nitrite. Constant changes of water should help fix that. But to answer your question, your tank may not have enough ventilation. Not enough oxygen in his tank to support fish. Change filters dropwise power should help, and with the air pump is only focused on sending air to the tank, not filters should be able to get more oxygen into the water.
