Betta tank hood and filter problem?

I have a 10 gallon tank and a hood that has no lights but I guess that slots work that what you call the holes that light goes off in my question is my filter Hangon regent from 1930 to 1960 is too large for the slots in the hood (which has not yet arrived the aquarium) and I was thinking about cuting the hood to make it larger or smaller Gétigné a new filter for the groove is about 4-6 inches by 1.5 inches high hope someone can tell me what to do and gives me some ideas of filters that can go with the smaller slot thanks
