How do I remedy this problem with my cichlid aquarium?
I have a 29 gallon tank with 4 cichlids. They eat their food when its swirling in the water but don’t eat much if it after it falls to the bottom, even though it seems like they haven’t eaten enough. The food at the bottom then grows fuzz on it. If I pour in less food, it doesn’t seem like they all get enough, even though some still falls to the bottom. What should I do?
I have fairly common ones; an electric yellow, a couple of blue ones shaped like the yellow and a convict (the only south american). The container says don’t feed more than they’ll eat in a couple of minutes, but it takes less than a minute for the food to reach the bottom of the tank and they don’t eat much if it after that.
I think they may need a lot less food than you think they do. Cichlids will usually eat food from the bottom. And if they’re eating some of the food, that means the food itself isn’t one they refuse to eat. So probably they’re just full.
Don’t feed more than your fish will consume in 3 or 4 minutes.
Fish need much, much less food than many people think.
On the other hand, if they’ve been eating well but they seem to have lost their appetite suddenly, it could be a water quality problem. If this is the situation, test your water parameters and do a couple of 50% water changes over 2 or 3 days.
