Aquatic Plants

i want to grow the aquatic plants in my home aquarium tell me some basic care taking of them?
hello , i want to grow heavy plants in my aquarium i like them very much but till now im not able to grow them in a healthy manner please suggest me some important instructions which i have to take care of
Well, i wish i knew what size tank you have, then i could be more accurate about sujesting some plants. But with that being said here are a coulple of things about aquatic plant in general to get you started. Aquatic plants are like outdoor plants they all require differant amounts of light to do their best. Some plant will do ok in a low light tank like your basic flouresant bulbs, and some plants need high light with would require a actuall plant light bulb that has uva rays which simulates natural sun light. A plant tank needs at least 12 hrs of “tank light” time a day. There are three categories of aquatic plants foreground(front) mid-ground, and background plants according to the height of the plants. Also depending on the size of your tank some plants might be to big or to tall to keep. Most retailers of fish will have plants for sale and they should be able to tell you the light needs and height of the plants. But to get you started if you want to set up a plant tank and are not ready to switch out you light bulbs just yet you might want to try these low light plants. Java fern, java moss, hornwort. there are other but these are the most commonly found in pet stores. another thing about plants… If you want the plants to thrive and grow well i recommend purchasing a co2 canister, all plants need this to do their best, and your aquarium in itself will not produce enough co2 by itself to support this, you can get a pretty cheap one from petsmart for about $33. this one will support 10gl -55 g. Also plants will need supplements on occasion, you can purchase these at petstores also, iron enriching tabs and liquids. You can also add laterite to your gravel this is a clay like substance that has been broken down into a gravel sized bits and can be mixed in with your existing gravel,ALTHOUgh let it be noted that light color gravel does best like you neutral rock due to the fact it reflects light back up to the plants, dark gravels like dark green, blue, black, red.ect… absorb light. You also might read online that you can use sand as a substrate instead of gravel, i would be cautious of this due to the fact that sand has a habit of compacting and when it hardens will trap lots of bad things like waste and uneaten foods that will later lead to a nitritus build up which eventually will be toxic to the fish. Plants also do not like alot of top water disturbance so it is best to not let the tanks water as it evaporates stay at low levels for long the water commming down from your filter is enough of a current to make them unhappy so always keep the tank full. For decorations i would use peices of driftwood, this will give the tank a natural feel, and you can always attach plants to the drift wood for example java moss is a ground covering plant that is almost fern like in appearance. you can use fishing line to tie it down to driftwood and let it grow all over it. This will provide cover for the fish and looks great. Another thing to keep in mind is what fish species will be in your plant tank. Some fish love veggies and will tear up a fish tank in days to weeks, so be aware of what you are trying to keep and there dietary needs, you could waste alot of money in plants that end up food. for example guppys love to eat plants, goldfish dig plants, silver dollars will take them out in a day. I would recomend the basics on your normal plant tank fish. rasboras, white clouds, glo lite tetras, neons, cardinal fish, green neons, black neons, silver hatchets, orange von rios or any other color faze of von rio, …most all of your tetras will be fine in plant takes… use a school of cory cats for bottom feeder and for algae eaters purchase a otocinclus. these small fish work wonders on algae and will not eat your plants unlike other types of algae eaters…you can also purchase freshwater shrimp, there are differant kinds ghost shrimp, marble shrimp, etc… these are neat scavengers and they love plant tanks. Always keep in mind that however many gallons your tank is , is roughly the amount of inches of fish it can hold. so dont over do your tank.
