Aquarium light question: What is T5, T8, etc?
I see a lot of aquarium bulbs that say “T5″ or “T8″ What does this mean?
Also, can somebody send me a link to a good fluorescent screw-in bulb that is perfect for growing freshwater plants? I hear 6400K bulbs are the best for this. The bulb has to be small because I have an incandescent hood with a protective plastic shield to keep the bulb from getting wet- unfortunately this also limits the diameter that the bulb can be. I can get up to two for this hood.

The T designation refers to the diameter of the fluorescent tube in eighths of an inch.
T5 is 5/8″
T8 is 8/8″ (1 inch)
T12 is 12/8″ ( 1 1/4″ )
For the bulbs, don’t limit yourself to looking in pet stores – be sure to see what they have at home improvement stores too. Home Depot carries a wide variety of light bulbs – they may have just what you need. Probably a lot cheaper too.
