Feeding a betta while we are on vacation?
My husband and I are going out of town for 2 weeks for the holidays. We have a crowntail betta and we were curious about a few products. He is in a small 2.5 gallon aquarium, so an automatic feeder will not work. I saw at the pet store a 7 day pyramid and a 3 day feeder – both apparently dissolve slowly into the water over time, giving the fish the food it needs. I was wondering are these any good? Do they cloud the water and create unhealthy living conditions? My brother in law will stop in twice during this time to make sure everything is okay so he can put a new feeder in – he just can’t be there to feed him everyday. Thank you!
I do have a Whisper filter actually meant for a 10 gallon aquarium
In a tank this small, I wouldn’t use the pyramid feeders. They are intended to be used in community tanks with multiple fish. The product description on the 7-day feeder reads: “Feeds 20 average-sized fish in a 10 gallon aquarium for 7 to 8 days”. Using one of these in your 2.5 tank with only one fish, is just asking for trouble.
You could culture your own live foods for him and your brother-in-law could give some of that to him during his visits.

Bettas can go quite a while without being fed. Just think of all the poor fish whose owners thought they eat plant roots and went weeks without properly feeding them. It’s always better to underfeed than overfeed and you might come home to a very frustrated and half-starved betta, but at least it will be live when you return.
